Local retailers join forces with Bray Tourism each year to celebrate Bloomsday in Bray, the childhood home of James Joyce. Bloomsday in Bray celebrates the life and works of James Joyce – one of Ireland’s greatest writers! On the 16th June Bray turns back the clock to 1904 to celebrate with a range of cultural activities, including readings, dramatisations and general merriment. The event is now a major highlight in Bray’s Tourism Calendar.
James Joyce lived at No. 1 Martello Terrace, Strand Road, Bray from 1887 to 1891. The Christmas dinner scene in his novel ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ took place here. The terrace was built in 1860 and is one of Bray’s best preserved and most distinctive seafront terraces.
